Proposition 50—What Do You Think?
Proposition 50 (2025): Congressional Redistricting
Proposition 50 is a legislative constitutional amendment proposed in response to partisan redistricting efforts in other states, such as Texas.
What it does: Temporarily replaces California's independently drawn congressional district maps with new maps drawn by the state legislature.
Duration of new maps: The legislative maps would be used for congressional elections in 2026, 2028, and 2030.
After 2030: After the 2030 U.S. Census, California's independent Citizens Redistricting Commission would resume drawing the congressional district maps.
Goal: To counter partisan gerrymandering in other states and, according to supporters, protect voters' rights.
Controversy: The measure is highly controversial, with opponents claiming it is a partisan power grab by Governor Newsom and state Democrats and proponents finding it necessary to offset a bias in the Texas congressional representation
