Craig Unger is a New York Times bestselling author of six books on the Republican Party’s relentless, multi-pronged assault against American democracy, including "House of Bush, House of Saud;" "House of Trump, House of Putin," and the current "Den of Spies." A Harvard graduate, Unger’s journalism has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Guardian, and many others. His media commentary spans all major outlets. His extensive reporting documents a powerful case that the Republican Party has become the greatest threat to American democracy -- all done in their heedless, corrupt pursuit of power and money. At only the 100th day in Trump's second presidential term, our democracy has been severely damaged, our courts compromised, congress sidelined and in disarray, our international standing greatly diminished. How did we get here, and how can we restore American democracy in full along with our standing in the world? The acclaimed author and media commentator Craig Unger will insightfully address these questions, along with Trump’s decades as a Russian asset, Trump’s recent visit with the Saudis and more.

CADEM Statewide Convention

By Tim Dixon

The California Democratic Party held the CADEM Statewide Convention from Friday, May 30, 2025, through Sunday, June 1, 2025. Palos Verdes Democrats were well represented with delegates and volunteers to the convention. The convention focused on strategy and preparations for next year’s mid-term elections. The delegates had some honest and frank discussions about what went wrong last year in the Presidential election and how the Democratic Party can communicate better with average Americans and working people. We also elected our California Democratic Party statewide officers and regional directors. While there were some challenges to three of the four incumbent statewide officers, the incumbents prevailed. Our past president, Connie Sullivan, was re-elected as a regional director of the California Democratic Party.

Palos Verdes Democrats Club Members and CADEM Delegates Jeannie Hahn, Connie Sullivan, Reggie Jue, Tim Dixon, Allison Phillips, and Caryl Schwartz.

The highlights of the Saturday general session were speeches by United States Senator from New Jersey Cory Booker and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Senator Booker began his remarks with some personal family history. His grandparents lived in California and his mother graduated from Manual Arts High School and USC. Booker’s comments were eloquent and inspiring. His main point was that the upcoming election must be about what we are for and not what we are against.

Minnesota Governor Walz also gave an inspiring speech that made the point that working class people need to know what the Democratic Party stands for and that the party is working for them. He further stated that we need to propose big ideas as opposed to incremental change.

May 2025 Club Meeting Report

By Tim Dixon

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, the Palos Verdes Democrats had an informative and inspiring meeting with two of our elected officials who spoke about local issues affecting our communities; Sara Deen, Vice President, and Board Member of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, and Rancho Palos Verdes Mayor Pro-Tem Paul Seo. We also had former NFL player and activist Chris Kluwe speak at the meeting.

Chris Kluwe

We had the privilege of hosting Chris Kluwe, an American writer, social activist, and former professional football player, as a speaker at our recent meeting. Kluwe, who served as a punter in the National Football League (NFL), played college football for the UCLA Bruins before spending eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. Raised in Seal Beach, California, and now a resident of Huntington Beach, California, he shared insights into his activism, both during his NFL career and in the years that followed, addressing issues at local and national levels.

Kluwe discussed pressing concerns in his Huntington Beach community, where far-right extremists have gained control of the city council and implemented a far-right agenda. This agenda includes banning books in the community library and introducing partisan policies into what should remain nonpartisan city governance. To counter these developments, Kluwe has been actively collecting signatures for two ballot initiatives, which will be voted on in a special election on June 10, 2025, to challenge this far-right agenda.

On a national scale, Kluwe addressed the first 100 days of the Trump Administration, focusing on its push for tariffs, the DOGE initiative, and budget cuts that lack widespread public support. He emphasized the importance of civic engagement, urging attendees to participate in door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and attending city council and other government meetings to hold officials accountable and resist extreme agendas.

Kluwe’s presentation was a compelling call to action, encouraging everyone to actively engage in their communities to promote accountability and oppose far-right policies.

See Video from Our May Meeting
Sara Deen

Sara Deen, who serves as Vice President and Board member of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, began her remarks by thanking the members of Palos Verdes Democrats for the hard work in passing SOS, the school bond initiative to repair our schools and for electing two reasonable school board members. Sara spoke about the efforts by far-right extremists to disrupt our school board meetings and attack public education. She also reviewed with our members the current issues confronting the school board by the new Trump Administration, including executive orders that temporarily disrupted HeadStart Programs, Teacher Training Programs and Special Education Programs. Sara reviewed lawsuits that have been filed to combat the Trump agenda and protect our schools and children. Sara also talked about the need to pass a budget by July 1, 2025, negotiations with the teachers and how the relationship between the board and the teachers has improved and become more collaborative. Dr. Deen also informed us that the board has also approved the budget priorities following the passage of the SOS Initiative to repair our schools.

Paul Seo

Paul Seo, who serves as Mayor Pro Tem in Rancho Palos Verdes while also serving in leadership for the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, spoke about several local issues. Paul reviewed several issues that the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council has approved even though the city council has two Democrats and three Republicans. He stated that the council has found a way to work together to get things done for the community. Mr. Seo spoke about changes with respect to the Sheriff’s department where the City Council has created a public safety division to remove some of the administrative functions from the sheriff’s department so they can focus on keeping the city safe. Paul also discussed efforts to improve cell phone reception that should be installed this fall using new wireless devices on light poles that should increase reception, which will improve safety without obstructing views. Paul also spoke about the city council’s effort to give our youth voices in the community by creating a new youth advisory council. Finally, Paul spoke about the efforts to deal with the landslide areas. Efforts by the city have succeeded in slowing down the land movement, but the need exists for funding to continue this effort. Unfortunately, the Trump administration through DOGE has cut the funding for this needed project to help our homeowners.

From the Activism Chair

By Caryl Schwartz

The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA) passed the House and now the Senate is considering a budget bill that threatens millions of families’ health with cuts to Medicaid.  The GOP repeatedly promised not to undermine Medicare or cut Medicare but the OBBBA does just that by cutting eligibility and restricting access to benefits.  It will hit low-income older adults and people with disabilities.

What else is in the 1100-page bill?  The bill removes the Federal Judiciary’s ability to enforce court orders.  The regime wanted to weaken the courts and the GOP House and Project 2025 delivered.

The bill is the Project 2025 agenda rolled into a tax bill. The bill killed money-saving clean energy tax credits.  The Bill gives Donald Trump the power to “suspend” or even “cancel “upcoming elections.  The GOP is devoted to destroying Federal grants and government agencies (CDC, FDA, HHS, NIH, FEMA etc.) that protect the health and safety of Americans in addition to programs that provide a safety net for the most vulnerable Americans.  The OBBBA’s projected increase to the deficit is 4.8 trillion over the next 10 years.

Action Item:  Ask friends and family in Red & Purple states to contact their Senators to vote NO!

The social media break-up of Musk and Tyrant in Chief provided distraction from this bill, as did the Marines being sent to LA and attacks on Democratic leaders.

King Donald has presented over 50 tariffs, only to renege -- thus keeping markets swinging while he and his sycophants buy low and sell high. American businesses can’t adequately plan in this chaotic environment.

Trump is monetizing the Presidency hauling in hundreds of millions through crypto schemes, foreign bribes, $400 million plane gifted from Qatar that will cost the American taxpayer 1 billion to bring it up to Presidential Air Force One standards, luxury real estate, and $500,000 memberships to a new club called “The Executive Branch.”  Oversight is gone because Trump fired inspectors general and watchdogs.  To quote Senator Elizabeth Warren, “an orgy of corruption” is unfolding in plain sight.

We must continue to protest over mass illegal deportations, holding up of allocated funds to public institutions, threats to free and fair elections and unjust prosecution of those that speak up.  Just this week, Trump’s Department of Justice pressed charges against Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) for simply doing her job.  Our own Senator Padilla was tackled and violently removed from Kristi Noem’s press conference in LA.

Oppose the Save Act:  The SAVE Act is a confusing, costly, and dangerous proposal that would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. It would eliminate online voter registration in most states and shut down the voter registration drives that many communities rely on. This bill would hit millions of Americans—including seniors, veterans, students, women, and rural voters—especially hard. https://www.mobilize.us/commoncause/event/758610/
