Upcoming Annual Meeting & Picnic
By Tim Dixon
Join us for our 10th Annual Meeting and Picnic on Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The annual meeting and picnic will be held at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, 26825 Rolling Hills Road, Rolling Hills Estates, California 90274. This event is our annual club fundraiser with a recommended donation of $30.00. A catered meal from Kelly’s Korner will be provided consisting of assorted sandwiches (including a vegetarian option), salads, chips, as well as ice cream and refreshments.
We have confirmed an outstanding line-up of speakers to participate is this year’s event including our California State Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, former NFL player and activist Chris Kluwe, Rancho Palos Verdes Mayor Pro Tem and candidate for State Assemblymember Paul Seo, West Basin Water District Board Member and Candidate for State Assemblymember Scott Houston, Rancho Palos Verdes City Councilmember George Lewis, Trustee for Palos Verdes Library District Zoe Unno, and President of California Young Democrats Giovanni Chavez.
In today’s political climate, it is more important than ever for us to gather and hear from our elected officials on what is being done locally, in our state and nationally to resist and combat the radical, dangerous, and harmful changes being implemented by the Trump Administration. Everyone should take advantage of meeting and hearing from our Democratic leaders and learning what each of us can do to protest, resist, and fight back.

The picnic has also been a great opportunity to socialize with other Democrats and in addition to the outstanding line-up of speakers, we plan to have a few activities for children. Hope to see you on Sunday, July 20, 2025!

President’s Report
By Robert Wynne
American Democracy is dying every day. With a corrupt President (and Russian asset) in the White House, aided by a subservient Supreme Court and sycophants in the Congress and Senate, the guardrails protecting our rights are practically gone. The latest budget disaster, which adds trillions to the deficit while destroying Medicaid, is the latest Trump-era disaster. Now more than any time in history, Democrats need to protest, band together, and strategize.
Our Palos Verdes Democrats Picnic and Fundraiser on July 20 is your chance to hear from local, state, and national Democratic leaders and discuss our options to save America. The Palos Verdes Democrats Picnic and Fundraiser on July 20 is the perfect opportunity to hear from key leaders at the local, state, and national levels, and discuss how we can fight to preserve the future of our country. Join us from 5-7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church to show your support for our club, our politicians, activists, and the broader Democratic community.
June 2025 Club Meeting Report
By Tim Dixon
On Sunday, June 29, 2025, the Palos Verdes Democrats had a packed house on hand for our June meeting as well as a large number joining the meeting via zoom. The keynote speaker at the meeting was the New York Times bestselling author and Harvard graduate Craig Unger.
Mr. Unger is the author of six books on the Republican Party’s relentless, multi-pronged assault against American democracy, including "House of Bush, House of Saud;" "House of Trump, House of Putin," and the current "Den of Spies." In his remarks, Mr. Unger reviewed several instances dating back to the Reagan Administration where the Republican Party has tampered with or obstructed our democratic process to obtain or retain power. He spoke about his extensive reporting which documents a powerful case that the Republican Party has become the greatest threat to American Democracy. He chronicled the rise to power of Donald Trump and Trump’s connection over many years with Russia and Vladimir Putin.
Mr. Unger also discussed the current state of our democracy and how our courts have been compromised, the Republican controlled congress that is unwilling to provide a necessary check on the administration, and the press failing to perform its vital function to report on the administration’s actions and the threat to our democracy. Mr. Unger spoke about what citizens can do to resist and counter the current threats, including the power of the current protests and grassroots activism. Following his remarks, Mr. Unger took nearly an hour of questions from the members present or via zoom.
From the Activism Chair

A fiscally irresponsible action allowed One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) to pass, and not only does it increase the deficit by a minimum of $3.8 trillion, but it also hikes the Federal debt ceiling by $5 trillion over the next decade. The bill gives billions to the ultra-wealthy while reducing tax revenues that the country can collect for decades. The GOP is crafty; the most generous tax breaks are scheduled to occur before the 2026 elections and are temporary. Painful cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and other programs begin after midterm elections and become more diabolical over the years. At least 12 million Americans are expected to lose their healthcare coverage after the midterms. Forty percent of the children in our county receive their healthcare through Medicaid.
The OBBBA restricts the judiciary by limiting the use of contempt orders to compel compliance from government officials. The provision prohibits the use of federal funds to enforce contempt orders unless the party bringing the case provides a security or bond. This could leave courts powerless in many cases, especially against the executive branch.
The bill erects a permanent immigration police state. The annual budget for masked ICE agents in unmarked vehicles will swell from the current budget of $3.4 billion to $45 billion by 2029. I find these numbers staggering. The ICE detention budget is larger than the total budget for USAID and is larger than the cuts to NIH, CDC, and cancer research combined. The Department of Homeland Security and DOGE joined forces to create the federal government’s searchable national citizenship database.
The abductions of working law-abiding immigrants will continue on steroids with the Trump regime’s total disregard for the rule of law. As ICE raids escalate, immigrant families face not only legal threats but urgent needs for food and rent. South Bay for All is locally fundraising to help keep South Bay street vendors safe.
Alligator Alcatraz in the Florida Everglades received its first detainees on July 3rd, two days after the facility flooded. One has to question the durability, health, and safety of a center built in eight days that consists of tents and trailers surrounded by a razor-wire fence. Five Democratic Florida legislators concerned about humanitarian conditions were denied entry to the facility on July 3rd. According to Governor DeSantis of Florida, the state will deputize National Guard as judge advocates to serve as immigration judges to expedite the removal of migrants from both the facility and the country. It's a one-stop shopping location with an airstrip with an 11,000-foot runway to accommodate deportation flights directly from the detention center. The detention center will cost $450 million annually to operate. Trump has stated FEMA as the source of funding to reimburse Florida.
The bill also prevents women on Medicaid from accessing any Planned Parenthood services, including: contraceptives, sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening, Pap smears, breast cancer screenings, and prenatal care. Losing Medicaid funding would put 35% of Planned Parenthood centers at risk of closure, and over one million women would lose vital healthcare.
The SSA sent out an email celebrating the bill’s passage to SSA recipients. The email is gaslighting Americans, claiming reductions in SSA taxation and failing to mention that it will make Social Security insolvent by 2032.
Another issue that concerns me, which is not part of the OBBBA, is a June 19th DOJ memo that directs Civil Division lawyers and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices to “prioritize” denaturalizing naturalized American citizens in vaguely defined circumstances. This kind of policy, in this administration, may be a prelude to depriving people of their rights. Trump has publicly threatened to deport Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic primary winner in the NYC mayor’s race, and Elon Musk for criticizing the fiscal impact of the huge deficit.
What can you do? Get involved! Continue to show up for protests, write letters to Legislators, letters to the editors, and have conversations with your sphere of influence. Reach out to relatives and friends in purple and red states and inspire them to action.

Oppose the Save Act: The SAVE Act is a confusing, costly, and dangerous proposal that would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. It would eliminate online voter registration in most states and shut down the voter registration drives that many communities rely on. Carol Moeller Retiring from PV Democrats Board
By Connie Sullivan
After 16-plus years, Carol Moeller has decided to step down from our board.
Carol has served in every capacity from President (2014-2016) to Parliamentarian. And she was awarded the Democrat of the Year by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party for her service.
In each position she held, she provided amazing leadership, dedication, humor, and level-headedness that will be truly missed.
It’s no exaggeration to say that she became a friend to everyone with whom she served. She has a way of diffusing tensions that can arise sometimes when members don’t see eye-to-eye on a particular issue. She has a great knack for compromise.
We couldn’t let her retire without letting everyone know of her contributions to our board and the party. Fortunately, we know she will continue as a member of the club, so this is not “goodbye”, it’s “thank you”.
Notes from the LACDP June Meeting
By Jon Munoz
The LACDP meeting was held on Tuesday June 10 th . The meeting was held online due to the curfew that existed in some parts of Los Angeles. Also, the meeting took place during the week between the initial ICE raids and the No Kings Rally. A number of speeches, including LACDP Chair Mark Ramos, focused on the shocking impact of the raids.
There was more discussion of the STAND (Strategic Task Force for Action, Navigation and Defense Committee). The task force will be focusing on generating more local community involvement as well as activating community members. Key to the task force will be working on the specific needs of each community . The meeting overall was heavy on speeches denouncing the raids, but light on any major news or announcement. The next meeting will be on Tuesday July 8th .
